Be a Good Neighbor: 5 Simple Gifts to Welcome a New Neighbor

Photo Credit: tima-miroshnichenko In a world that sometimes feels detached, it’s the simple, thoughtful gifts that make a lasting impact. Introducing yourself and giving a thoughtful gift to your new neighbor can foster a connection and make them feel welcome in their new home (or for you to feel welcome into the neighborhood). From the comforting aroma of fresh bread to the personal touch of a handwritten card, here are a few gestures that invite community and togetherness in your neighborhood.   Loaf of fresh bread with jam or butter: Nothing can beat a fresh slice of toast with butter or jam on top. Gifting a locally made or homemade loaf of bread accompanied by a jar of jam or a pat of butter is a gesture that speaks volumes. If homemade bread isn’t your thing, try finding a locally-made loaf - we love Gaston’s Bakery. For a locally-made jam or flavored butter, try the Boise Farmer’s Market or the Capitol City Public Market in the colder months.   Homemade baked cookies or brownies: There's something heartwarming about the time and effort put into making baked goods from scratch. The time it takes to combine ingredients, mix the batter, and bake the treats will not go unnoticed by your new neighbors. Package these treats in a charming box or on a plate, and you have a gift that welcomes your neighbors and shows you care.   Simmer pot kit in a jar: A simmer pot kit is a simple mix of spices and other ingredients that when set to simmer in a pot of water, makes a house smell amazing. Layer the jar with cinnamon sticks, cranberries, orange slices, and more (check out our blog post which includes a recipe and instructions here), write a little handwritten note with instructions, and voila! Your new neighbors will receive the gift of a cozy, fragrant atmosphere in their new home.    Handwritten card with your contact information and address: In this digital age, a handwritten card adds a personal and sincere touch. Introducing yourself and giving your contact information and address on your note helps make a stronger connection and show your new neighbors you are there for them if they need you. This simple gesture will foster a sense of community and make your neighbor feel welcome in their new environment.    Veggies from your garden: If you have a green thumb and find yourself with some extra product from your garden, pack them up in a basket or bag and bring them to your neighbor! Freshly harvested fruits and vegetables are a delicious and special way to share your harvest. It will not go unappreciated by your new neighbor, and who knows, maybe you will inspire your neighbors to start a garden of their own.
